Trius - 2015 Vidal Icewine

Good for: dessert, cocktails

I hadn't even heard of icewine before visiting the Niagara region so I was excited to try something new. We tasted the original Trius Vidal 2015 ice wine. We were informed by our host that we had to taste the wine correctly – pour the liquid onto the tip of the tongue, not the top, then take under the tongue for three seconds to warm up then swallow. Well, doing this, we looked quite silly, trying to make sure it didn’t hit the top of our tongue but it did ensure we got the most out of the wine!

It was sweet with rounded soft tropical flavours, like a desert wine but not syrupy. The wine was refreshing and light which made it appealing on a different level other than just another sticky. Trius’ website provides a short explanation on how their ice wine is made, “Naturally frozen Vidal grapes are hand harvested from Niagara-on-the-Lake vineyards at -10°C and pressed immediately, releasing only one tiny drop of the purest extract from each grape.”

This would be delicious with a plate of cheese and fruits or as they suggest with vodka to make an icewine martini - this I will be sure to try in the future!

We also tried their Trius red blend. It smelt like Christmas to me with a deep aroma but light to drink. It wasn’t smooth but it was fresh on the tongue. Stephen had this with his lunch whilst I tried a wild fermented Chardonnay. The Chardonnay was certainly different to any other Chardonnay I have ever tasted. It really did taste like wild flowers!
