Firstly, the setting of this restaurant is just beautiful. It's like being in a Sevillian orangery garden. The restaurant is part of the Melk Abbey area (also known as Stift Melk) so after a walk around the abbey this is the perfect place to sit back and relax with a nice glass of their local wine.
I decided on their goulash soup and Stephen went with their schnitzel. The schnitzel was average but my soup was absolutely delicious. It was so rich and meaty but without being heavy. I could really taste the meat juices in the soup and it was like a luxury gravy soup. There were small pieces of beef, potato and onion to give it some substance and a lovely soft bread roll to mop up the last bits.
Even though it was a thirty degree day, I loved this soup and would have it at any chance possible!
I had this soup there a few weeks ago; agree entirely. It's perfectly delicious, and I had the zander afterwards mainly out of principle, since we can't get it where I live.
I think it was the caraway and cumin that they used but I've left out of my previous attempts that gave it such a special quality; I intend to test this hypothesis in my own kitchen this weekend.
