Au Fantassin, Strasbourg

We stumbled upon this restaurant when wandering around Strasbourg one evening. We hadn't looked up any restaurants beforehand and didn't have internet to google this one so we took a chance. It was pretty busy but the setting was so lovely; right by the water, fairy lights and a nice lively but not overpowering chatter of people. They claimed to serve Alsatian food (a mix of French and German) but really it seemed to be more Italian focused with a few select Alsatian dishes such as tarte flambeé.

The positive was that the pasta carbonara was absolutely delicious with smokey bacon, al dente pasta and a creamy sauce.

Unfortunately this is where it ends. There was nothing wrong per se with my seafood salad but it was just bland and I'm not entirely sure what the sauce was made up of. The service was terrible, we had to wait to have our order taken, for drinks, for the bill. Also, there are too many tables so people were pushing past our chairs all the time to reach their table. It also meant that if anyone was smoking within five tables of you, you might as well have been smoking yourself.

So, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant but I would love to have just the carbonara dish again!
